Eddy Commons on the move, Eddy St. now open!

I was thrilled to drive down Edison/Angela Blvd. today and see that the new Eddy St. is now open to the public to drive through. The Eddy Commons development has dramatically change the face of the south side of Notre Dame's campus. Eddy Commons features a 4 story street scape on either side of Eddy St. just south of Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, IN. For those of you who are new to the Eddy Commons concept, the University of Notre Dame contracted with Kite Realty Group (Indianapolis, IN) to construct the mutli-use development on the south side of Notre Dame's campus. The development will feature retail shops including a 20,000 sq. ft. Notre Dame bookstore space and restaraunts for the Irish enthusiast. There will also be office space, a parking garage, 2 hotels, and residential units for sale including condos, townhomes and patio homes.

The development is stunning and hopefully will take South Bend by storm. The only thing more awe inspiring than the scope and beauty of the project is the pricing. With retail space leasing for +30/sq. ft. and residential units selling just shy of $300/sq.ft., the question everyone wants to know is who is going to live there? The median housing price in South Bend is $85,000. Eddy Commons is offering a 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 750 sq. ft. condo from the $180's. This should be good news for area property values if the project is a success. One thing is certain for those of us who are die hard Fighting Irish Fans who bleed Blue and Gold, we will all be on the edge of our sets until 3:30pm when Charlie Weis and the boys take the field for the first time in 2009 against Nevada. Go Irish!
